Extension Gerrit Rietveld Academy
Students have developed a new plan for the extension of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. Driven by lack of space and the desire to bring all educational activities together in one place, the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Sandberg Institute have taken steps to realize new construction at the current location on the Fred. Roeskestraat. The challenge is to develop a design for this new building for two architecture students. The contemporary starting point of the modern, new art school is that the exchange of information and ideas contributes to a better development of the student. It is becoming increasingly important that the artist (in training) looks more widely and takes a critical attitude to social developments and problems. The Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Sandberg Institute therefore have the need to create more space and collective places where interdisciplinary work will play an important role. The realization of the new building raises questions about the current and future relationship between Gerrit Rietveld and the Sandberg Institute. These two buildings already have a clear identity, one from 1966 and one from 2005. The third building must form a coherent whole and become the connecting factor between the Gerrit Rietveld and the Sandberg Institute with a distinct identity. Interdisciplinary work The extension is a large assembly hall with a large space that can be expanded or split up. It is the place where assembling and all disciplines come together. In the large room there are '' cells '', assuming a size of 4000mmx4000mm, which can be joined to larger cells using scrollable elements. Every student has his or her own preference, the one wants to work in a structured environment and in a closed space, the other has freedom and flexibility. The assembly hall thus responds to the wishes of the user. With the addition of the third building, A-factory, and the circulation through the buildings, the academy will work as a campus and all educational activities will take place at one location. This creates more opportunities to learn from each other and discover new techniques and encourages interdisciplinary working.
